COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Seven-Run Seventh Leads Fullerton to Eighth Victory in a Row

Cal State Fullerton scored seven runs in the seventh inning Saturday en route to an 11-6 nonconference college baseball victory over Texas at Austin, extending the sixth-ranked Titans’ winning streak to eighth.

Jim Betzsold hit his third home run and D.C. Olsen his second to lead a 15-hit Fullerton attack. Third baseman Craig Skyberg had three hits, two runs scored and a run batted in, and second baseman Jeff Ferguson had two hits, two RBIs and two runs scored.

Chad Rolish (2-1) pitched 5 1/3 innings, giving up two runs on two hits, walking one and striking out three. Derek Fahs and Ted Silva combined to shut out the No. 8 Longhorns (6-2) over the last 1 2/3 innings.

Fullerton (9-1) will try to sweep Texas for the first time, when the teams conclude the series today.

In other nonconference baseball:

Azusa Pacific 8, Chapman 5--Mike Regan was two for five with a double and two RBIs, and Juan Hernandez recorded the victory in relief for Azusa Pacific (5-0). Kurt Towsen was two for five with a double and a triple for Chapman (0-3-1).

Cal State Dominquez Hills 2, Southern California College 1--Cal State Dominquez Hills scored on a two-out, bases-loaded walk in the eighth to beat SCC (0-4).

The Toros (3-2) were held hitless by Paul Gutierrez (0-2) until the eighth, when Jesse Espinoza led off with a single before scoring the winning run on a walk to Ray Judy.

In nonconference softball:

Southern California College 8-2, UC Riverside 1-3--Angie Vega went three for six with a double and a triple in the doubleheader for SCC (1-1). Shannon Saylor earned the victory in the first game. UC Riverside is 3-1.

In nonconference men’s swimming:

UC Santa Barbara 147.5, UC Irvine 95.5--In freestyle races, Elijah Fan won the 200 (1 minute 46.29 seconds) and 500 (4:47.46) and Mark Swangel the 50 (21.55) and 100 (48.01) for Irvine (2-12).

In nonconference women’s swimming:

UC Santa Barbara 147, UC Irvine 103--Gwen Yoshizumi won the 100 backstroke for UC Irvine (4-12) in 59.73.

In nonconference men’s tennis:

Redlands 8, Southern California College 1--Ross Andel won at No. 1 singles, 6-2, 7-5, over John Lansville for visiting SCC.

In nonconference women’s tennis:

Occidental 7, Chapman 2--Kristen Ross defeated Leslie Heitler, 6-2, 6-7, 6-1, and Sheryl Kalbach defeated Amy Albano, 4-6, 7-5, 7-6, for Chapman’s only points in its first women’s tennis match since 1988, when the program was cut because of budget problems.

Southern California College 9, Mount St. Mary 0--Cathi Smith defeated Mary Barrett, 6-1, 6-1, and teamed with Cathy Binnquist to defeat Maria Cosum and Mary Barrett, 6-1, 3-6, 6-2, to help Southern California College (9-0) remain unbeaten.

Wichita State 5, UC Irvine 4--Mary Morr defeated Kim Doze, 6-0, 6-1, and teamed with Tiffany Licuanan to defeat Doze and her partner Dana Lemsher, 6-7, 6-1, 6-1, for UC Irvine (2-3).
