An elderly man died late Wednesday when he drove his car into oncoming traffic, possibly after suffering a heart attack, police said Thursday.

The man, whose identity was not disclosed pending notification of next of kin, was backing his car out of a driveway on Burbank Boulevard just west of Sepulveda Boulevard at 10:40 p.m. and continued through two lanes of traffic, across a center divider and into another lane of oncoming traffic, said Detective Don Bellante of the Los Angeles Police Department’s Valley Traffic Division.

“He could have had a heart attack,” Bellante said. “It has all the indications of that because of the driving and because of the impact.”

The man’s car was struck by another vehicle, but suffered only minor damage. He was pronounced dead on arrival at Sherman Oaks Hospital and Health Center, Bellante said.

An autopsy is being performed to determine the cause of death, Bellante said.
