David Robinson leads the NBA in triple-doubles this season with five.

Big deal.

He also leads the league in quadruple-doubles.

He has one.

That came Thursday at San Antonio when Robinson had 34 points, 10 rebounds, 10 assists and 10 blocked shots to lead the Spurs to a 115-96 victory over the Detroit Pistons.

It was the first quadruple-double since Houston’s Hakeem Olajuwon had one in 1990 and only the fourth in NBA history.

“I’ve been close a number of times, so this is something I wanted to do,” Robinson said. “I’m excited because it’s one thing you never know if you’re going to get.”

Robinson’s teammates knew he was close, and they kept him apprised of what he needed.

“How could I not know I was close with the bench and the stat crew?” Robinson said, laughing. “Every time I came to the bench, (reserve center) Jack (Haley) would tell me how many more blocks I needed.”

Robinson’s heroics powered the Spurs to their team-record 11th victory in a row and put them into a virtual tie for first place in the Midwest Division with Houston.

San Antonio’s last loss came Jan. 20 at Minnesota. The Spurs have won 22 of 25 games since Dec. 26.

The Pistons lost for the 25th time in their last 29 games.

Miami 115, Seattle 112--Steve Smith matched his career high with 32 points and Grant Long scored the Heat’s final six points at Miami, where the SuperSonics’ five-game winning streak ended.

It was only the third victory this season for Miami in 15 games decided by five or fewer points.

Glen Rice added 28 and extended to 40 his team record for consecutive free throws, going seven for seven. Sean Kemp and Detlef Schrempf each had 22 points for Seattle.

New Jersey 117, Boston 98--Derrick Coleman had 28 points and 17 rebounds and Kenny Anderson added 17 points and 16 assists for the Nets at Hartford, Conn.

The victory put the Nets at the .500 mark (24-24) for the first time since Nov. 14, when they were 3-3. Boston lost its sixth in a row.

Indiana 84, Dallas 73--Reggie Miller scored 22 points at Dallas, where the Pacers took advantage of the Mavericks’ 33% shooting in their lowest-scoring game this season.

Dallas trailed, 70-66, with 3:12 to play, but Vern Fleming hit a 15-foot jump shot, Antonio Davis made one of two free throws and Miller nailed a three-pointer with 1:29 left to push the lead to 76-66.

Fleming scored 19 points for the Pacers, who won for the eighth time in nine games.

New York 102, Cleveland 95--John Starks scored 32 points and made all nine of his second-half shots at Richfield, Ohio, as the Knicks avoided their first three-game losing streak of the season.

New York, which has won five in a row against Cleveland, won it with free throws, scoring 18 of its 28 fourth-quarter points from the line.

Starks also had seven assists and six rebounds. Patrick Ewing had 22 points and nine rebounds for the Knicks.

Washington 109, Minnesota 105--Rookie Calbert Cheaney scored a career-high 30 points on 11-for-16 shooting as the Bullets extended the Timberwolves’ road skid to nine games.

Tom Gugliotta had 18 points and 18 rebounds for the Bullets, who snapped a four-game losing streak. Michael Adams contributed 18 points and 13 rebounds.

Doug West scored 26 and Chuck Person 24 for Minnesota, which has lost eight of nine overall and 14 of its last 15 road games.

Golden State 119, Atlanta 115--Chris Mullin’s layup with 39 seconds left put the Warriors ahead for good, and Latrell Sprewell had a steal and two free throws with 12 seconds left to clinch the victory at Oakland.

The victory was the fourth in a row and seventh in nine games for Golden State, which had six players in double figures. Sprewell finished with 20 points.
