HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP : Garson Lifts Harvard to 88-51 Romp

Scott Garson scored 11 of his game-high 23 points in the first period as host Harvard-Westlake cruised past Workman, 88-51, in a first-round Division III-A playoff game Friday night at Harvard.

The Wolverines led, 32-8, at the end of the quarter.

Ryan Taban (13 points) and Ben Robbins (12 points, seven assists) also scored in double figures for the Wolverines (23-2), who matched the school single-season record for victories by the boys’ varsity basketball team.

Harvard will play Santa Paula in a second-round game on Tuesday at a site to be determined.

In other first-round Southern Section games:

Santa Clara 57, Maranatha 50--Damian Cantrell scored 26 points and Damien Smith added 19 to lead the Saints (17-7) in a Division IV-A game. Maranatha was led by Matt Hangman with 14 points.

Village Christian 71, Mojave 60--Dave Gustafson scored 24 points and grabbed 12 rebounds to lead the host Crusaders (17-8) in the Division IV-A game. Chad Hanson added 23 points and nine assists for Village Christian.

Buena 60, Thousand Oaks 52--David Nutting scored 17 points and Robbie Knight added 14 points and 10 rebounds for the Bulldogs (16-10) in the Division I-A game. Peter Lauer led Thousand Oaks (21-7) with 16 points.

Campbell Hall 96, Thacher 41--Washington-bound senior center Alex Lopez had 23 points, nine rebounds and four blocks to lead the visiting Vikings (19-6) in a Division V--AA game.

Crescenta Valley 63, Antelope Valley 57--Brock Jacobsen had 19 points, 10 rebounds and eight assists for visiting Crescenta Valley (17-9), which took a 13-point lead into the fourth quarter and held on to win the Division I-AA game.

Oak Park 84, St. Joseph 70--Ryan Garth 37 points to lead the host Eagles (22-2) in the Division IV-A game. Garth’s outburst replaced that of leading scorer Shawn Williams, who did not dress for the game because he has mononucleosis.

Long Beach Wilson 92, Canyon 88 (OT)--The visiting Cowboys were eliminated in the Division I-AA game.

San Marino 41, St. Francis 37--The host Golden Knights (19-7) were upset in a Division III-A game.

First-Round Playoffs

Montclair Prep 3, Maranatha 2 (2 OTs)--Senior Shane Sanders knocked in a loose ball five minutes into the second overtime as the visiting Mounties (10-5-3) upset the second-seeded Minutemen (22-1-2).

Moorpark 4, Morro Bay 0--Aaron Linder made eight saves in recording his 14th shutout, tying the school record he set last year. The Musketeers improved to 23-2-1.

Buena 4, Compton 0--Mark Thompson recorded his 14th shutout of the season, leading the host Bulldogs (15-4-3) in a Division II match.

Burroughs 2, Schurr 0--Eddie Melgar scored a goal with two minutes remaining in the Division III match at Burroughs. The Indians took a 1-0 lead when Roberto Perez scored a first-half goal.

Santa Paula 1, Oak Park 0--Gabriel Villa made six saves and recorded his fifth shutout of the season, leading the Cardinals (13-5-2) in the Division V match.

Calabasas 4, Cathedral 0-- Shayne Ferber scored twice as the Coyotes had 26 shots on goal in the Division V match. Adam Cooper and Rasmus Jenson also scored for Calabasas (11-3-4).

Hawthorne 3, Simi Valley 2--Kenny Hickman and Shawn Williams scored in the Division I match at Simi Valley. The Pioneers trailed, 2-1, at halftime but tied the match on Williams’ goal.

Chatsworth 2, Lincoln 1--Michael Pries and Yobani Cruz scored second-half goals to give the Chancellors (11-4-1) a City Section home victory.

Kennedy 3, Gardena 1--Devin Reveles scored the winning goal for the Golden Cougars. Adam Rofer and Manuel Aguilar also scored for fourth-seeded Kennedy (13-3).

Sylmar 3, Narbonne 1--Gubini Cabrera scored his 13th goal of the season for the host Spartans. Sylmar (9-3-1) will meet Van Nuys on Tuesday at Sylmar.

South Gate 3, San Fernando 2--The host Tigers (3-4-1) fell on a South Gate goal with less than five minutes remaining. Ruben Bolanos’ two second-half goals got San Fernando back into the match.

North Hollywood 3, Dorsey 1--Juver Urbina scored the winning goal midway into the second half of North Hollywood’s match at Dorsey. The Huskies, who were seeded 22nd, added a point when Joel Juarez scored his fourth goal in the last five matches.
