LINCOLN HEIGHTS : Cultural Center Gets a $20,000 Grant
Pacific Telesis has awarded a $20,000 grant to Plaza de la Raza Cultural Center to support its School of Performing and Visual Arts.
The school, established in 1978, enrolls 350 to 600 students a week in dance, theater arts and music classes, said executive director Gema Sandoval. The students attend classes after school, from 3:30 to 9 p.m. Monday through Friday and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday.
The grant will help the school continue programs that must be funded through private sources, Sandoval said. The city provides 40% of the school’s $250,000 annual operating budget.
“It is absolutely true that what we do is provide a safe haven for children,” Sandoval said. “We are a latch-key program, without setting out to be, and a gang-prevention program, without setting out to be.”
Most students attend classes for free, but those who can afford it pay $35 for a 10-week session.
