SYLMAR : Meeting to Focus on Traffic, Safety Issues

Share

Residents concerned about freeway traffic on local streets will have a chance to question public officials at a community meeting scheduled in Sylmar tonight.

Los Angeles City Councilman Richard Alarcon called the meeting to discuss traffic and public safety issues arising from the earthquake, as well as general problems in the community, said Sybil MacDonald, director of communication for Alarcon. Officials from the state Department of Transportation, Metrolink and the Los Angeles Police Department will be available during the meeting, scheduled for 7 to 8:30 p.m. in the auditorium of El Dorado Avenue Elementary School, 12749 El Dorado Ave.

“Sylmar has been impacted a lot from that rerouting and is starting to experience a lot of wear and tear,” said MacDonald.

The worst impacts have been in the northern part of the community, where Golden State Freeway traffic trying to negotiate the Newhall Pass or head east on the Foothill Freeway has been detoured through local streets.

“One of the problems is the rerouting has been done in such a way as you have to drive a long distance to get back on” the Golden State Freeway, said MacDonald.

Residents also have expressed safety and traffic concerns after the opening of the Sylmar/San Fernando station of the Metrolink rail line, said MacDonald.
