WHITTIER : School Book Storage Building to Be Razed

Share

An East Whittier school district building that was knocked off its foundation during the Jan. 17 earthquake will be demolished, a school official said.

The 1920s stucco building has been used for storing books, said Gary Drabek, maintenance and operations manager. The building showed no signs of damage after the 1987 Whittier quake, he said.

School officials said it may cost up to $500,000 to demolish and replace the building, and they have applied to the Federal Emergency Management Agency for funding.

Officials also said an auditorium at East Whittier Middle School will be off-limits for at least a year while workers remove asbestos that was exposed after a decorative facade was knocked loose during the January quake.
