COLLEGE BASEBALL ROUNDUP : Rolish’s Pitching, Baserunning Help Titans Defeat Oklahoma
Cal State Fullerton used timely defense and the first complete game of Chad Rolish’s career to defeat Oklahoma, 4-1, in the Anaheim Hilton and Towers Baseball Classic Saturday at Fullerton.
Rolish (4-1), a senior left-hander, retired the side in order only once, in the fifth inning, but kept Oklahoma off-balance with a variety of off-speed pitches.
Fullerton (14-2) was held hitless for 4 2/3 innings by Sooner starter Steve Connelly but was able to score two runs in the bottom of the first.
Dante Powell and Jeff Ferguson reached base on walks, and advanced to second and third on stolen bases.
Designated hitter Adam Millan hit a grounder to Connelly, who caught Ferguson straying off second. But as Connelly threw to second, Powell broke for home and slid in safely under catcher Chris Briones’ tag, while Ferguson advanced to third.
Bret Hemphill then drove in Ferguson with a sacrifice bunt, giving the Titans a 2-0 lead.
Fullerton added a run in the fifth on a two-out triple by Powell and a Brian King single.
The third-ranked Titans face No. 1 Georgia Tech at 4 p.m. today.
In another Anaheim Hilton and Towers Classic game:
Georgia Tech 5, San Diego 4 (11 innings)--Nomar Garciaparra’s two-run single in the bottom of the 11th won it for the Yellow Jackets (6-1).
In the Southern California College baseball tournament:
Southern California College 8, Albertson’s College (Ida.) 6--Ryan Seidel hit his first home run and was two for three with two runs batted in for SCC.
Jeff Beckley (1-2) gave up nine hits over seven innings for SCC (5-6). Albertson’s College is 2-3.
Albertson’s College 11, Concordia 0 (7, time limit)--Matt Rasmussen had two home runs and three RBIs for Albertson’s (2-3).
