Share

Registration is open for a math and science career day that will be open to sixth- through 12th-grade girls from private and public schools throughout Ventura County.

Sponsored by the American Assn. of University Women chapters in Ventura, Camarillo and Oxnard, the career day will be held from 8:45 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. March 19 at Oxnard College.

Designed to encourage girls to prepare early for careers in math and science, the conference will feature presentations by about 35 women professionals in fields ranging from banking to medicine.

AAUW organizers are recommending that girls who want to attend the event register in advance to get their pick of three presentations they want to attend.

In addition to the career workshops for girls, the conference will include a presentation for parents who want to know how they can help their daughters prepare for careers in math or science.

Registration forms listing the various workshops are available at schools throughout the county.

Forms can also be obtained by calling AAUW members Sally Dunham at 485-6358, Betty Nilmeier at 642-7102, Terry Lisagor at 484-3928 or Sallye Gilbert at 484-4054.

Normally, the Simi Valley and Thousand Oaks AAUW branches hold their own math and science career days. But the Thousand Oaks event had been scheduled for Jan. 17, the day of the Northridge earthquake, and was not rescheduled.

The Simi Valley event had been scheduled March 5 at Simi Valley High School, but was canceled because of earthquake damage to the school.
