PREP ROUNDUP : Doubles Teams Provide Victory for Villa Park

The No. 1 doubles team of Brandon Louie and Eric Wu, and the No. 3 team of Jim Simpson and Leon Chien, won their sets for Villa Park in a 4-2 tiebreaker against Esperanza after a 9-9 nonleague boys’ tennis match Wednesday at Esperanza High.

Single sets in singles and doubles decided the outcome in which Louie and Wu won, 7-5, and Simpson and Chien won, 9-7. Villa Park is 2-0 and Esperanza drops to 1-1.

In other nonleague boys’ tennis:

Dana Hills 18, Laguna Beach 3--Freshman Brandon Fallon swept his singles sets, 7-5, 6-1, 6-2, for Dana Hills (1-0). Elliott West won two of the three sets for Laguna Beach (0-1).

Irvine 14 1/3, Huntington Beach 6 2/3--Junior and No. 1 singles player Todd Harrington swept his sets for host Irvine (1-0), 6-0, 6-1, 6-0.

Servite 11 1/3, Valencia 9 2/3--No. 1 singles player Dan Lighthipe swept his opponents, 6-3, 6-0 and 6-0, for Servite (2-1).

Sunny Hills 13 2/3, Newport Harbor 7 1/3--No. 2 doubles team of Juno Quan and David Farkis swept their sets for Sunny Hills, 6-0, 6-3, 6-0.

Western 12 1/3, Los Amigos 8 2/3--Mack Sunthonlap swept his singles sets, 6-1, 6-4, 6-2, for Western (1-0).

In nonleague golf:

Ocean View 210, Cypress 254--Bobby Dion, Kurt Macio and Bill Benson all shot five-over-par 40 at Cypress Point for Ocean View (2-1).

San Clemente 207, Vista 267--Jason Gross shot a two-over-par 38 at Pacific Country Club for host San Clemente (1-0).

University 410, Fountain Valley 458--Todd Garrun shot a 3-over par 75 to lead University (1-0) at Mile Square.

Western 436, Costa Mesa 440--Tiger Woods shot a one-under-par 70. He was one-over on the back nine of Costa Mesa Tuesday and two-under on the front nine at Los Coyotes Wednesday for Western (1-0).

In nonleague boys’ swimming:

Villa Park 124, Costa Mesa 47--Senior Matt Cornue won the 200 (1:44.74) and 500 (4:54.68) freestyles. Sam Greyeli won the 100 backstroke (58.47) in Costa Mesa’s only first-place victory. Villa Park is 1-0 and Costa Mesa is 0-1.

In nonleague girls’ swimming:

Villa Park 132, Costa Mesa 37--Tea Lindberg, an exchange student from Finland, won the 200 individual medley (2:21.03) and the 100 breaststroke (1:09.07). Villa Park is 1-0.

In nonleague boys’ track and field:

Marina 89, Irvine 46--Bill Sampson won the 300-meter high hurdles and high jump to lead Marina (1-0). Jeffrey Bodholdt won the shotput and discus events for Irvine (0-1).

In nonleague girls’ track and field:

Marina 89, Irvine 38--Marina (1-0) swept the sprint and field events at Irvine.

In nonleague boys’ volleyball:

La Quinta 3, Valencia 1--David Rosenthal had 13 kills to lead La Quinta (1-0), 15-10, 3-15, 15-5, 15-10. Joe Reynoza had 22 kills for the Tigers.

Claremont 3, El Dorado 2--Sean Morrison had 17 kills for host El Dorado, which lost, 15-5, 6-15, 15-7, 9-15, 8-15.
