Artesia Man Killed in Police Standoff
Sheriff’s deputies shot and killed a gunman as he emerged from his home in Artesia after a two-hour standoff Friday, officials said.
Witnesses said the man barricaded himself in his home in the 17600 block of Horst Avenue after firing three shots in a dispute with neighbors about 1 p.m., Sheriff’s spokesman Sgt. Ron Spear said.
Deputies who surrounded the house saw Benjamin Sedano, 44, pointing weapons out the front window, Spear said. One was a high-powered hunting rifle with a scope.
About 3:25 p.m., Sedano emerged from the house carrying two .357-caliber magnum revolvers and a Glock 9 millimeter semiautomatic pistol, Spear said.
“He assumed a combative shooting stance and pointed one of the revolvers at the special weapons team members,” Spear said. A special weapons team member shot him in the upper body.
