AWARDEES NAMED: Four people will receive humanitarian awards at the annual Los Angeles Clergy Network Awards Luncheon on June 16 in Woodland Hills, according to Rabbi Bernard M. Cohen, director of the network.

They are Los Angeles County Sheriff Sherman Block, for service to Los Angeles youth and community; Jane Boeckmann, publisher and editor of Valley Magazine, for philanthropy and public service; Mother Rosa Broadus, missions director at Calvary Baptist Church of Pacoima, for community service, and Lutheran minister Karl Kniseley, president UniHealth Foundation, for founding the Bioethics Institute of UniHealth America.

HEALTH CARE: Scott Anderson, associate director of the Sacramento-based California Council of Churches, will talk about health-care issues at a Clergy Network luncheon March 16 at Woodland Care Center, 7120 Corbin Ave., Reseda.

Anderson directs the Comprehensive Health Care Education Project, which has the backing of the Northern and Southern California Ecumenical Councils and evaluates major health-care policy proposals now before Congress from religious and ethical perspectives, said a spokesman. MISSIONARY-IN-RESIDENCE: A native of Ghana who has been African director of Youth for Christ International will begin a four-week course titled “God and Our Suffering” at 11:30 a.m. Sunday at Kirk o’ the Valley Presbyterian Church in Reseda.

The Rev. Samuel Atiemo, 48, also has been appointed missionary-in-residence at the church while he pursues a degree in clinical psychology at Fuller Theological Seminary in Pasadena.

The adult discussion-format course will be held in the parlor of the church, 19620 Vanowen St. For information, call (818) 345-2535.

CONCERT: A string quartet from the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra will perform Latin American music in a free concert at 7 p.m. Tuesday at St. Elisabeth Catholic Church, 6628 Cedros Ave., Van Nuys.

CHOIR FESTIVAL: The Choral Conductors Guild of San Fernando Valley will present its annual Children’s Choir Festival at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, 14646 Sherman Way, Van Nuys, at 4 p.m. Sunday, with groups from at least five churches performing.

Brenda Mohr, director of the Angeles Chorale Children’s Chorus, will be the guest conductor.

NEW BOOK: The Rev. Michael Quinn, rector of St. Jude’s Episcopal Church in Burbank, has co-authored “Inner Healing,” a book on an aspect of prayer written from a charismatic renewal perspective.

The Rev. Doug Gregg, co-pastor of Faith United Presbyterian Church in Highland Park, was co-author of the paperback, published by InterVarsity Press.
