OUTLOOK

When the Mariners get their basketball players (Maurer, Martinez and Alliman) back, they might be pretty good. But the way Pacifica’s basketball team is playing, that might be a while. Until Maurer (the team’s No. 1 pitcher who won four games last year) returns, Flatten will have to rely on Foley, his No. 2 pitcher, and DePippo, his all-league catcher who batted .426 last season, to carry the load. Flatten is expecting big things from Brown, who sat out last season because of an injury, and Martinez (.315). After that, Pacifica is fairly inexperienced. “Our strengths are that we have a lot back, but our concerns are that in key spots we have some young people who will have to develop pretty quick,” Flatten said. One of those youngsters, Stivers, will start at shortstop after spending most of last season on junior varsity. Another inexperienced player is Peters, who probably will be the team’s third pitcher. Flatten said defense also will be a key.
