WATTS : Service Is Theme of Scholarship
A commitment to community service is the theme behind Drew Economic Development Corp.’s newly established scholarship for students at King/Drew Medical Magnet High School.
The nonprofit development corporation is sponsoring three $500 scholarships to 1994 graduates.
Recipients will be selected based on community service and academic performance by the school’s faculty and reviewed by Beverly T. Davis, the founding chairwoman of the corporation’s board of directors. The scholarship was named in honor of Davis.
“It really is like a shot in the arm because (the scholarship funds) show us that the hard work we’re putting forth is . . . being noticed,” said Shirley Starke, principal at the high school.
King/Drew Medical Magnet High, founded in 1982, has 220 students.
Last month, the school received a $5,000 contribution from the Educational Foundation for Black Americans in Long Beach.
