Lifeguards Help Pull People From Boat Near Pier

Share

A 22-foot cabin cruiser with transmission problems foundered in the surf Saturday night, injuring two people and prompting an unusual sea rescue by city lifeguards.

The five people aboard--including a 3-year-old boy--navigated the boat into the surf south of the Huntington Beach Pier at 6:25 p.m., drawing the attention of a city lifeguard who ran to grab the child out of the boat.

Lifeguard Mike Bartlett said that the four adults then jumped out of the boat, which was left bobbing in the waves until a five-ton tow truck could be located to drag the vessel from the water and across the sand.

Bartlett said two of the passengers were later taken to a hospital for treatment of minor injuries.
