OUTLOOK

Deats has inherited a program that can only get better after the Mustangs suffered through a winless 1993 league campaign. With few players and even less equipment to work with, Deats is optimistic his team can overcome all the hurdles and establish a quality program. Deats, a Costa Mesa graduate, is the first on-campus coach the program has had in the last 13 years. The lone returning starter for the Mustangs is Steck, who is a senior left-handed pitcher and first baseman. Returning lettermen Adelmund, Rice and Estrella should give Costa Mesa some experience at the infield positions. Chatman and Niebling are all-around athletes who played for the Mustangs’ football team and should give the baseball team some much-needed offensive support and base-stealing capabilities. Schroeder is a newcomer to the varsity, but he has caught Deats’ eye in practice and will take over much of the duty behind the plate. Costa Mesa should get an early indication of its abilities when the Mustangs participate in the Newport Elks tournament this week. Rivals Trabuco Hills and Estancia, which finished third and fourth in the Pacific Coast League last year, are also participating.
