HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP : Saugus Wins Chino Softball Title Behind Gillies

Saugus High won the Chino softball tournament title Friday with a pair of victories sparked by the pitching of sophomore Jamie Gillies.

In the final, the Centurions (8-0) beat Alta Loma, 11-1, as Gillies (6-0) pitched a two-hitter and Kelli Kranz drove in five runs.

In the semifinal, Gillies pitched a no-hitter in a 1-0 victory over Bishop Amat, the No. 1-ranked team in the Southern Section’s Division II.

Kranz, who tripled and doubled in the final, drove in Jill Passafiume with a squeeze bunt in the first inning against Bishop Amat. Passafiume had singled, stolen second and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt.

Harvard-Westlake 7, Immaculate Heart 6--The Wolverines scored two runs in the seventh inning of a nonleague game at Harvard-Westlake (4-0).

Angie Wong and Gloria Abramson each singled to open the inning and scored on consecutive wild pitches. Samantha Bernie (4-0) earned the victory and Suzanne Richman went three for three.

Village Christian 9, Flintridge Sacred Heart 0--Sophomore Jessie Levio (2-2) struck out seven and walked two for the host Crusaders (2-2) in a nonleague game.

Sophomore Judy Swanson went three for four with two RBIs and freshman Sara Sutton was two for three with two RBIs.

Louisville 13, Nordhoff 2--Liz Hudson had two RBIs for the Royals and Lindsay Harris struck out seven in a nonleague game.

Hawthorne 7, Oak Park 3--Shana Silverman had two hits for the Eagles in a quarterfinal game of the Crossroads tournament. Oak Park (4-2) led, 3-2, after five innings but seven errors resulted in five unearned runs for Hawthorne.

BASEBALL

Santa Barbara 6, St. Francis 5--Robert Diaz scored the winning run in the eighth inning of a nonleague game at Santa Barbara. St. Francis left 11 runners.

Corby Foster had two hits for St. Francis (1-1) and Danny Phillips added a two-run double.

Oakwood 15, Providence 4--Jon Dennis had four RBIs for Oakwood before being ejected in the fourth inning for throwing his bat. The host Gorillas rapped out 11 hits in the Liberty League opener.

Dan Morgan struck out six in four innings for Oakwood (2-0, 1-0).

Santa Clara 6, Oak Park 3--Brent Schneider had two doubles and drove in two runs, but it wasn’t enough for the Eagles (1-1-1) in a nonleague game at Oak Park. Eagle pitcher Cameron Marcarelli (1-1) gave up three earned runs in five innings to take the loss.

BOYS’ VOLLEYBALL

Royal d. Simi Valley, 15-5, 15-2, 15-6--The Highlanders (1-1), ranked No. 1 by the Southern Section in Division II, got seven kills from Jerod Whiteley and 17 assists from setter Josh White. White had 14 service points and two aces in the Marmonte League match.

Agoura d. Westlake 15-9, 15-13, 15-3--Zach Elam had 11 kills and Ray Howden added 29 assists as Agoura swept Westlake in a Marmonte League opener. Craig Schwartz added four kill blocks for the Chargers (3-0, 1-0).

Camarillo d. Channel Islands 15-10, 15-12, 15-10--Brian Isleib and Mike Corella each had seven kills for the visiting Scorpions in a Marmonte League match. Camarillo (3-1, 2-0) received 29 assists from setter Wayne Anderson.

Thousand Oaks d. Newbury Park 15-3, 15-8, 15-10--Thousand Oaks had little trouble with the visiting Panthers in a season-opening Marmonte League match. Jason Hartman had five kills and Bryant Edwards 19 assists for the Lancers.
