Olympic Auditorium

* For those with an interest in Los Angeles’ architectural heritage it was good news to learn of the reopening of the Olympic Auditorium (March 4), and The Times is to be commended for providing its readers with a summary of the building’s history. No mention was made, however, of its architect, Gilbert Stanley Underwood, who was commissioned to design the Olympic shortly after graduating from Harvard University.

Underwood went on to make many contributions to the city as the designer of the original Garden of Allah hotel on Sunset, our federal courthouse and post office annex nearby, and he was also the architect for many of the National Park hotels, such as the Ahwahnee in Yosemite.
