Bobby Sprain threw a two-hitter, and Pete Zamora homered for the third consecutive game as Capistrano Valley shut out Mater Dei, 2-0, for the championship of the Newport Elks baseball tournament Saturday at Tustin High.

Sprain (1-0) pitched out of a bases-loaded jam in the first inning and dominated the rest of the way in a matchup of two clubs expected to contend for the South Coast League title.

He limited the Monarchs (2-1-1) to one hit during the final six innings and retired 10 of the last 11 batters as Capistrano Valley (4-0), ranked fifth in Southern Section Division I, prevented Mater Dei from repeating as tournament champion.

“You can’t win many ballgames if you just get two hits,” Mater Dei Coach Bob Ickes said. “We just didn’t swing the bats. We made 11 outs on popups.”

Mater Dei starter Matt Treanor (0-1) was effective early before giving up the game-winning homer to Zamora in the third. With two outs, after Treanor hit Gabe Payne with a pitch, Zamora hit a fastball out over the right-field fence.

Sprain kept the Cougars in command from there. After a walk, a single and a hit batter in the first, Sprain allowed two baserunners in the final five innings, giving up a single in the fourth and a walk in the fifth. He struck out three and walked three.

In the third-place game:

Esperanza 5, Tustin 4--Greg Smith drove in the winning run for Esperanza (3-1) in the bottom of the seventh with two outs to capture third place. Smith was two for three with two runs batted in. Jason Webb went three for four, with two RBIs.
