EL RIO : County OKs Plans to Build Storm Drain

Share

Responding to complaints by El Rio residents upset about flooded streets after each heavy rain, Ventura County will spend $1.4 million to build a storm drain in the tiny community.

Over the last couple of years, Supervisor John K. Flynn, whose district includes the area, has received a number of complaints from residents, an aide said.

“A lot of these people felt the county was ignoring them,” said Catherine Serros, an administrative aide working for Flynn. “That’s why we initiated the process with public works.”

The 5,100-foot-long storm drain will draw water off Cortez Street from Salem Avenue to Ventura Boulevard.

The concrete pipeline will range from five feet to more than seven feet in diameter. Storm water will be collected in catch basins to be constructed along Cortez.

Officials from the county’s Public Works Department said that bids on the project would be advertised in May and that the seven-month construction project will begin in June. Because the plans for the storm drain have not been completed, the cost could rise, officials said.
