TENNIS : Martin and Lendl Ousted From Florida Tournament
Todd Martin and Ivan Lendl were eliminated in third-set tiebreakers in the second round of the Lipton Championships at Key Biscayne, Fla., on Sunday, but top-seeded Pete Sampras and Steffi Graf both won easily.
Martin, who will play for the U.S. Davis Cup team at India in two weeks, lost to Byron Black of Zimbabwe, 4-6, 6-2, 7-6 (7-5).
A finalist at the Australian Open, Martin continued his recent slump by losing for the third time in five matches. The American, ranked ninth in the world, said he is weary from already playing in six tournaments this year.
“I think I just need a few days off, and hopefully I’ll get the energy back in my legs and in my head,” Martin said. “I’ll just do something other than run around on a piece of cement.”
Lendl, meanwhile, squandered two match points, including one on a disputed call, and lost to Jan Siemerink of the Netherlands, 3-6, 7-5, 7-6 (7-5).
Sampras, the defending champion, ousted Diego Nargiso, 6-2, 6-2, and fourth-seeded Jim Courier rallied to defeat Jeff Tarango of Manhattan Beach, 2-6, 6-4, 6-4.
Spain’s Javier Sanchez defeated his older brother Emilio, 3-6, 6-2, 6-4, for his first victory in eight matches this year and his first in 10 against Emilio.
In women’s play, Graf defeated Ginger Helgeson, 6-2, 6-1, for her 28th consecutive victory.
Second-seeded Aranxta Sanchez Vicario, the two-time defending champion, defeated Patty Fendick, 6-1, 6-3, and third-seeded Gabriela Sabatini eliminated Chanda Rubin, 6-3, 6-2.
