NBA ROUNDUP : Maxwell Arrested, Then Leads Rockets’ Victory

Vernon Maxwell was a bit late Tuesday, but his entrance was grand.

Maxwell was arrested at midday in Houston for carrying a concealed weapon in his car, police said. By the time he was released, it was halftime of the Rockets’ game against the Portland Trail Blazers.

He played the whole second half, hitting key shots in Houston’s 105-99 victory.

“Max came back and I talked with him at halftime,” Rocket Coach Rudy Tomjanovich said. “He told me he was ready to go and that his energy level was great. I thought he gave us a boost.”

Maxwell made a three-point shot with eight minutes to play to cut the Trail Blazers’ lead to 90-86, then made a basket that tied the score at 90 with 6:47 left.

Akeem Olajuwon scored 41 points for the Rockets.

Phoenix 119, Cleveland 106--The Suns made 18 of 20 shots in a 42-point third quarter at Richfield, Ohio.

New York 88, Indiana 82--Patrick Ewing scored 26 points and Derek Harper had 17 to fuel the Knicks’ victory at home.

Chicago 108, Orlando 98--Bull Coach Phil Jackson was ejected but his team went on a 10-1 run at the end of the third quarter to pull away from the Magic at Chicago.

Minnesota 96, Philadelphia 87--Stacey King scored six consecutive points in a 10-0 run early in the fourth quarter at Minneapolis as the Timberwolves ended an eight-game losing streak.

Miami 101, Milwaukee 94--Glen Rice scored 14 of his 28 points in the fourth quarter for the Heat at Miami.

Golden State 123, Washington 93--Chris Gatling scored 11 of his 20 points in the first quarter as the Warriors opened a 15-point lead and cruised at Oakland.
