PREP ROUNDUP : Top-Ranked Sunny Hills Defeats No. 3 Diamond Bar

Sunny Hills, top-ranked in Division II, beat Diamond Bar, ranked third in Division I, 13 1/3-7 2/3, in a nonleague boys’ tennis match Thursday at Diamond Bar.

The No. 2 doubles team of Juno Kuan and David Fargas swept its sets, 6-3, 6-3, 7-6, and have not lost a set this season for the Lancers (4-0).

In other nonleague tennis:

Cypress 16, Western 5--Tim Wing and Leo Varshav each swept their singles sets for the Centurions (4-1). Western is 2-4.

Century 12, Anaheim 6--Hugo Alvarado lost his opener, 6-7, but won the next two, 6-3, 6-1, for Century (1-7).

In Century League boys’ tennis:

Foothill 14 1/3, Villa Park 6 2/3--Ryan Hollis won his singles sets, 7-5, 6-1, 6-1, for Villa Park (6-2, 0-1). Foothill is 7-1, 1-0.

In Sunset League boys’ tennis:

Ocean View 16, Westminster 2--Jakub Pietrowski, Paul Choi and Nam Tran swept their singles sets for the Seahawks (6-1, 4-0). Westminster drops to 2-4, 1-3.

Edison 14 1/3, Servite 6 2/3--Jeff Baker and Charles Kana swept their singles sets for Edison (6-1, 4-0). Baker won 6-3, 6-0, 6-0. Kana won 7-6, 6-1, 6-1. Servite is 5-4, 2-2.

Fountain Valley 18 2/3, Santa Ana 2 1/3--Matt Cole and An Pham didn’t lose a game and William Chen and Justin Hu swept their sets, 6-2, 6-2, 6-0, in doubles for Fountain Valley (3-5, 2-2).

Huntington Beach 10 2/3, Marina 10 1/3--Jeff Tang and Mark Nakachi won at No. 1 doubles, 6-2, 7-6, 6-1, and Jason DeVries and Alex Hennum swept at No. 2 doubles, 7-6, 6-1, 6-3, to lead Huntington Beach (3-5, 2-2). Marina fell to 1-6, 1-3.

In nonleague baseball:

Mater Dei 3-4, Irvine 1-6--Eric Mattern went four for five with and scored four runs in the double-header, including a bases-empty home run in the second game for Mater Dei (3-2-1).

Brad Ticehurst had five hits and three stolen bases. Eric Sobek pitched 2 2/3 innings in game two to improve to 3-0 for Irvine (4-5). Sobek had two hits and drove in the go-ahead run in the fifth.

Laguna Beach 5, Newport Harbor 3--Ian McDonald had two hits, including a triple, and scored twice, Brian Berberian had a two-run double and Sean Bill struck out seven in 6 2/3 innings to lead Laguna Beach (3-1). Mike Freeman hit a two-run homer in the top of the seventh for the Sailors (2-4).

St. Margaret’s 15, Tri-City Christian 0--Mitch Kelley went three for four, with three runs scored and three runs batted in for visiting St. Margaret’s. Joey Powell went four for five with two runs and four RBIs.

Corona Del Mar 10, Aliso Niguel 0--Five Sea King pitchers combined on a one-hitter. Andrew Stellar had two hits and an RBI and Jimmy Huston had two RBIs for Corona Del Mar (5-2).

In the Los Angeles Baptist baseball tournament:

Calvary Chapel 7, Sherman Oaks Buckley 0--Matt Herr struck out eight and gave up three hits for Calvary Chapel.

In nonleague boys’ swimming:

Sunny Hills 97, Servite 71--Sunny Hills’ Carlo Franzia won the 200 freestyle in 1:48.9, the 100 freestyle in 49.9 and swam on the winning 200 freestyle relay. Servite’s Brian Heifferon won the 100 butterfly in 55.08 and the 200 individual medley in 2:00.9.

In nonleague girls’ swimming:

Rosary 90, Sunny Hills 80--Ablla Younis won the 200 individual medley, 100 freestyle and was on the winning 200 medley and 200 freestyle relay for Rosary (3-0). Younis’ times in the individual events were 2:17.8 and 56.4.

El Dorado 110, Brea-Olinda 60--El Dorado’s Nancy Jo won the 200 medley and 100 free and Stacy Rosenburg won the 200 freestyle and 500 freestyle for El Dorado (2-1).

In Sunset League boys’ volleyball:

Fountain Valley 3, Ocean View 2--Brian Myers had 23 kills and Kurt Seckington added 48 assists and 10 blocks to lead Fountain Valley (3-0, 1-0) to a 15-10, 7-15, 15-4, 10-15, 15-5 victory. Dave Shelton had 16 kills and Mike Carney had 15 kills and 10 blocks for Ocean View (0-1 in league).

In nonleague boys’ volleyball:

Canyon 3, Century 0--Troy Langley had 14 kills and Matt Cohen had 34 assists for Canyon (5-0) in a 15-10, 15-7, 15-3 victory.

Foothill 3, Laguna Hills 0--Craig LeSueur had 34 assists and eight kills and Marc Kruse had 14 kills for Foothill (2-1), which won 15-10, 15-7, 15-11.

Villa Park 3, Western 2--Chris Greely had 25 kills, Jimmy Chou had 22 and Drew Wetzler 20 as Villa Park rallied from a 2-0 deficit to win 8-15, 13-15, 15-13, 15-10, 15-11. Robert Nguyen had 61 assists for Villa Park (2-2). Western is 5-1.

In South Coast League girls’ gymnastics:

Capistrano Valley 171.3, Brea-Olinda 164.3--Erin Powell matched her school record with a 9.5 on the balance beam for Capistrano Valley (1-0 in league).
