COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Northridge’s Burton Finishes 35th in NCAA One-Meter Springboard

Freshman Dawn Burton of Cal State Northridge finished 35th in the one-meter springboard competition Thursday in the NCAA women’s swimming and diving championships at Indianapolis.

Burton finished with 319.90 points in the preliminaries. Vanessa Thelin of Brigham Young won the title. Only eight divers qualified for the semifinals and finals.

Burton will compete in the three-meter springboard and 10-meter platform events later this week. She is the first Matador diver to qualify for the NCAA diving championships since Northridge moved to Division I in 1990.

BASEBALL

Canyons 21, Bakersfield 16--First baseman Tommy Nichols and third baseman Ted Keister had four hits each to lead a 25-hit attack for the Cougars in a Western State Conference game. Catcher David Castillo was three for four with five RBIs and shortstop Chris Pfaterhoauer was two for five with four RBIs for Canyons.

Valley 9, Santa Monica 6--Ozzie Areu scored the go-ahead run for Valley in the 14th inning on sophomore third baseman Vic Seper’s two-out double in the WSC game.

Areu (four for five), Seper (four four six), Marlon Hamilton (three for seven) and Jamie Zeichick (two for five) led a 16-hit Monarch attack in a WSC game. Monarch pitchers Francisco Mere, Doug Melvin and Ryan Messevier (2-0) gave up five hits in nine innings of scoreless relief.

Ventura 7, Oxnard 6--Jameal Nichol’s infield single drove in David Frazier with two out in the ninth inning to give the Pirates a WSC victory.

Frazier had a two-run double to spark a four-run rally in the ninth inning for Ventura, which fell behind, 5-0, in the first inning.

In nonconference games:

L.A. City 7, Antelope Valley 4--Ryan Branch went two for three and scored twice in a losing effort at Antelope Valley.

Al Watson paced L.A. City (11-6) by going three for four with a double and triple and drove in three runs. Teammate Ernie Diaz hit solo homers in the fifth and ninth innings.

Antelope Valley is 9-6.

Mission 3, Moorpark 2--Gary Mathews scored the go-ahead run in the 11th inning on a sacrifice fly by Jesus Perez to lift Mission (12-10) over Moorpark (8-8-1).

Mission starter Robert Ballester allowed three hits in 11 innings. Ballester (4-1) struck out six, walked two and did not allowed an earned run.

Steve Chavez had two hits for Mission.
