An inflatable raft was shot out from under a bather on Lake Elizabeth Monday and a 43-year-old transient was arrested a short time later, after leading police on an eight-mile freeway chase.

Enzo Orello was taken into custody by the California Highway Patrol after he was spotted traveling northbound on the Golden State Freeway in a van matching the description of the vehicle used by a gunman who sank the raft with several shots at about 8:30 a.m.

The unidentified man in the raft was not injured in the attack and was able to swim to shore, authorities said. He gave authorities a description of both the armed suspect he saw standing on the bank and of the van the suspect drove off in, authorities said.

CHP Officer Brian Lottermoser said he saw Orello make an illegal lane change on the freeway and believed the van matched the description of the vehicle that had been identified as the suspect’s.

Lottermoser said he chased Orello eight miles north on the Golden State Freeway before Orello pulled over and was arrested without incident. The CHP knew of no motive for the shooting.

Orello was booked on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon at the Los Angeles County Sheriff Department’s Santa Clarita station. His bail was set at $55,000, authorities said.
