Fountain Valley’s Billingsley Changes Mind

Share

Gordon Billingsley said Wednesday he will remain as the Fountain Valley boys’ basketball coach. Athletic Director Mike Henigan announced Monday that Billingsley had resigned.

“I talked with some of the kids . . . Brandon Leimbach told me I was crazy to quit,” Billingsley said. “But the decision to quit wasn’t a spur of the moment thing.

“A few weeks ago, I told Mike I would resign. I didn’t quit because I was tired of coaching, but it was more of a frustration thing. I haven’t had anyone on campus to help out with the lower-level programs and I think those kids get cheated.

“But I figured I’ve done this for five years by myself so I’ll do it for a couple of more years,” Billingsley said.

Billingsley is 64-65 at Fountain Valley, leading the Barons to the Southern Section Division I-AA quarterfinals this season, where they lost on a last-second shot to eventual-champion Long Beach Poly, 50-48. The Barons won their first Sunset League championship in Billingsley’s five-year tenure.
