HUNTINGTON BEACH : Truck Spills Diesel Fuel Near Channel
A dump truck overturned at a construction site near Talbert Channel on Wednesday morning, spilling about 15 gallons of hydraulic fluid and diesel fuel onto a grassy area next to a wetland.
“It’s not much to be concerned about,” said Patrick Moore, a spokesman for the state Department of Fish and Game, which oversaw the cleanup. “Only traces of the oil went into the water and there was no loss of wildlife.”
The accident--near Magnolia Avenue and Pacific Coast Highway--involved a truck owned by Lohrman Truck Inc. of the City of Industry. According to a Fire Department spokesman, the mishap occurred about 8:30 a.m. when the truck toppled because of an unevenly distributed load of rocks it was carrying.
“It was quite a mess,” said Steve Safford, a local construction worker who drove by a short time later. “The truck was on its side and the cab was crushed.”
The driver of the truck--identified by the Fire Department spokesman as Robert Parra, 36--was not seriously injured.
According to Moore, the trucking company will be cited for violating a state law that makes it a misdemeanor to dump petroleum products in or near a waterway.
