BASEBALL / DAILY REPORT : DODGERS : Park Impresses Again, Awaits Roster Decision

Chan Ho Park made one of his final bids to solidify a spot on the team’s opening day roster Wednesday at Vero Beach, Fla., in the Dodgers’ final Florida game, pitching the first four innings and giving up one run in a 4-1 victory over the Yankees. He got his second victory of the spring.

After the four-hit, one-walk, two-strikeout performance, pitching coach Ron Perranoski said the South Korean rookie will pitch--probably in relief--in Sunday’s final game of the Freeway Series against the Angels at Anaheim Stadium.

“I did my best, and I worked as hard as I could, and I’m just waiting for the decision,” Park said.

Park, who was called for his fifth and sixth balks of the spring for fidgeting on the mound while set, lowered his earned-run average to 2.35.

“I feel very confident I will be in the majors,” he said.

Owner Peter O’Malley and Manager Tom Lasorda have said they hope Park makes the opening day roster. “That’s a very good sign,” Park said when asked of O’Malley’s comments.

“I’m sure Peter’s still hoping and I’m still hoping,” Lasorda said, refusing to officially place Park on the pitching staff. “I think everybody’s pulling for him.”

Right fielder Cory Snyder, who has resisted going on the disabled list despite nursing injuries all spring, acknowledged it might be best to start the season on the DL after suffering a minor knee injury earlier this week.

“It’s a possibility, yeah,” said Snyder, who was left behind in Vero Beach for extra work when the team flew out Wednesday evening. “We’ve got a good team here, and I don’t want to do anything that hurts it or me. If they call me Sunday and I’m not 100%, I’m not going to lie.”

Mike Piazza hit his ninth home run of the spring, a second-inning solo blast over the left-center field fence that crashed high into the trees. . . . Pedro Astacio, who entered the game with an 8.00 ERA, pitched five shutout innings. . . . Lasorda mixed up the batting order against left-hander Jimmy Key, dropping Delino DeShields from leadoff to the third spot and Darryl Strawberry from fourth to fifth, and moving Brett Butler from second to leadoff and Jose Offerman from eighth to second. “I would have to call that experimenting,” Lasorda said . . . . The Dodgers set their pitching schedule for the Freeway Series: Opening day starter Orel Hershiser and Ramon Martinez will pitch Friday at Dodger Stadium, Tom Candiotti is set for Saturday and Astacio and Kevin Gross for Sunday, both at Anaheim Stadium.
