PREP BASEBALL ROUNDUP : San Clemente Knocks Off Capistrano Valley

Chad Wanders pitched a five-hitter and was helped by five home runs as San Clemente upset No. 2 Capistrano Valley, 15-1, in a South Coast League baseball game Thursday at San Clemente.

Wanders (5-0), a senior who has signed to attend Hawaii next fall, had six strikeouts and the run he allowed was unearned. Wanders added four hits, scored three runs and drove in a run.

Brian Cook hit his first two home runs of the season, a three-run shot in the fourth inning and a two-run homer in the fifth. Mike Wood hit his first home run in the second.

Robert Firth and Bryan Fischer also had home runs in the fifth.

In another South Coast League games:

Dana Hills 2, Mission Viejo 1--Seth Etherton (4-0) pitched a five-hitter, struck out nine and gave up one earned run for Dana Hills (7-6-1, 2-1). Chris Toomey hit a home run in the sixth inning to put the Dolphins ahead, 2-0. Mission Viejo is 0-4 in league.

In the Garden Grove League:

La Quinta 11, Garden Grove 0--Jim Livernois (5-2) pitched a three-hitter with nine strikeouts for host La Quinta (11-2, 4-0). Sean Carlson had four hits, including a double, scored two runs and drove in one and Corey Fox had two hits, scored a run, and drove in four for the Aztecs.

Santiago 13, Los Amigos 10--Outfielder Mark Mooney started Santiago’s six-run fourth inning with a double to secure the Cavaliers’ victory. Third baseman Robert Weimann of Santiago hit his first home run of the season at the bottom of third with one on. Anthony Duran was three for three with three runs scored and three RBIs for the Cavaliers (3-7, 2-1).

In the Sea View League:

Tustin 10, University 2--Derek Baker hit a fifth-inning solo home run in the fifth inning for visiting Tustin (9-3, 4-0). Matt France went two for three, had two RBIs and scored a run for the Tillers. Teammate Rick Gonzalez was two for three with one RBI.

Woodbridge 3, Irvine 1--Josh Tourtellott, who went the distance, struck out 13 and Damon Durante went three for three and scored one run for Woodbridge (5-6, 3-0).

In the Metro League:

Pacific Shores 13, Corona Christian 4 (5)--Roldan Chapple struck out nine and gave up one hit to lead Pacific Shores (2-3, 1-3). Shawn Bertram hit a three-run home run and Chapple added a home run for Pacific Shores, in a game shortened by a lack of pitchers by Corona Christian.
