Teacher Will Remain Hospitalized

A high school English teacher who became ill after drinking a soda laced with cleaning fluid will remain in a Palmdale hospital for another night, hospital officials said Saturday.

Susan Ennis felt a burning sensation in her throat and then vomited during class Thursday morning at Littlerock High School after she drank from a can of soda.

Ennis told doctors that she feared someone poured dry-erase board cleaner into her drink because she had a bottle of the cleaner near her opened drink, said Cindy Reid, a spokeswoman for Palmdale Hospital Medical Center. Sheriff’s reports noted that the can smelled of cleaning fluid.

Reid said doctors were keeping the 32-year-old teacher to run further gastrointestinal tests, including checks to determine whether Ennis has suffered kidney damage.

Authorities said there was no information about any suspects in the case. Officials at the Antelope Valley Sheriff’s Station told reporters on Friday that they believed the incident to be a misguided prank and not a murder attempt.
