Draft Pick’s Stock Is Soaring

Ohio State defensive tackle Dan Wilkinson has long been the favorite to become the first pick in the NFL draft April 24 and his candidacy got stronger Tuesday when Buddy Ryan confirmed that the Phoenix Cardinals are the second team trying to get him by trading for the Cincinnati Bengals’ first pick.

Ryan said the Cardinals were offering running back Garrison Hearst, a first-round pick last year, and another player in hopes of acquiring Wilkinson, a 6-foot-3, 308-pound lineman.

The New England Patriots had offered the Bengals tight end Marv Cook, first- and second-round picks and another player.

Bengal General Manager Mike Brown has told some he is leaning toward selecting Wilkinson.

“I would love a chance to play in a Buddy Ryan defense . . . but I’m not going to say I don’t want to go to Cincinnati,” Wilkinson said. “I’ll go to whoever wants to win.”
