PREP BASEBALL ROUNDUP : Mater Dei Rolls Past San Clemente, 21-8
A showdown between two of the top teams in the South Coast League turned into a long afternoon for San Clemente when Mater Dei erupted for 15 runs in the fourth inning and coasted to a 21-8 victory Wednesday at Mater Dei.
The first nine batters got on base in the fourth inning before the Tritons recorded the first out and eight more reached safely before the second out was made.
The inning was so long, Mater Dei catcher Matt Treanor batted three times and second baseman Brad Ticehurst drove in five runs, three of them with a home run.
San Clemente (11-5, 4-2) came into the game tied for first place with the Monarchs (10-5-1, 5-1) and Dana Hills and had staff ace Chad Wanders on the mound.
Wanders (6-1) pitched out of trouble in the second and third innings, but could not record an out in the fourth.
Leading 2-0, Wanders walked Treanor to lead off the inning, then watched as his defense committed three errors, two on one play. After three consecutive singles, a double and Ticehurst’s towering blast, Wanders took a seat with San Clemente down, 9-2.
The Triton relievers did not fare any better, giving up 12 more runs in the final three innings.
The lone highlight for the Tritons came in the fifth, when Robert Frith hit his sixth home run of the season.
