Continuing a recent string of industry fare promotions, Northwest Airlines said Sunday that it is slashing summer vacation fares by up to 40%. Other major carriers said they will match the discounts.

Many of the nation’s airlines, which are facing competition from low-cost competitors and small, regional carriers, announced fare cuts earlier this spring to draw passengers.

Industry analysts say the moves will be reflected in upcoming earnings reports.

Tickets, which go on sale today, are good for travel from May 18 through Sept. 12 in the 48 contiguous states, as well as Hawaii; Canada; Cancun, Mexico, and the Caribbean, excluding San Juan, Puerto Rico.

Tickets must be purchased by April 27. They must be purchased at least 30 days in advance, are non-refundable and require a Saturday night stay.

“This promotion lets customers lock in their summer travel plans and get a great bargain as well,” said Tim Griffin, Northwest senior vice president of market planning and development.

“By planning ahead, travelers will be rewarded with the best fares they’re likely to see this summer,” Griffin said.

Spokespersons for American Airlines and United Airlines said they will likely match the fares in areas where they compete with Northwest.

A round-trip fare from Los Angeles to Dallas will be $338, compared to $485 for the regular 14-day advance-purchase fare. From Los Angeles to New York, it will be $378, down from $643.

The major carriers are already matching a limited sale being offered by America West Airlines on about half its route system through Wednesday.

Passengers can get up to one-third off tickets purchased at least 14 days in advance for travel through July 31.
