500 Who Helped in Quake Are Thanked
More than three months after the Northridge earthquake rattled Ventura County, the Board of Supervisors on Tuesday publicly recognized nearly 500 county employees, residents and business owners who assisted after the quake.
“Some of you did enormous things, outstanding things,” Supervisor Maggie Kildee told a packed room of employees and residents. “Some of you did very small things. Those things are what help people survive a disaster.”
Supervisor Vicky Howard told the group: “There was tremendous cooperation. . . . We are glad to have you here to say, ‘Thank you.’ ”
Among those honored at the ceremony were county social workers, Southern California Gas Co. employees and senior citizen advocates.
Gary Pace and his wife, DeLores, made the trek from Piru to pick up their certificate of appreciation.
Pace, who owns the community’s tiny Warring Water Service, said he was out patching leaks in water pipes minutes after the shaking stopped Jan. 17.
“We were out before the sun was up,” Pace said. “We had to be.”
