Caltrans will award a contract early next month to rebuild a quake-damaged freeway sound wall on the southbound side of the Golden State Freeway between California 170 and Van Nuys Boulevard in Arleta, according to a press advisory released Wednesday.

Under the estimated $1.2-million contract, concrete panels along the 9,000-foot-long sound wall will be replaced with new panels and stronger reinforcement. State and federal funds are underwriting the project.

The state agency is scheduled to award the contract to a private construction company May 6. Construction will begin in six to eight weeks and take about two weeks to complete.

Within two years, the California Department of Transportation will award another contract to landscape the area around the sound wall. The wall, built in three sections, is 10 to 14 feet high and is made up of concrete panels.
