YORBA LINDA : $2.5-Million Gym Gets Council’s OK

The City Council on Tuesday unanimously approved a $2.5-million gymnasium to be built at Hurless Barton Park.

The 23,000-square-foot gym, which will be the second in the city, is planned for the south side of the park next to Yorba Linda Middle School.

City officials hope to reach a joint-use agreement with Placentia-Yorba Linda Unified School District that would give the school use of the facility during school hours on weekdays.

Adult and youth sports teams and other city-sponsored recreational activities would have priority after school and on weekends.

In return, the school district would be responsible for about 30% of the cost of maintaining the facility, which is expected to be about $120,000 annually.

The gym has been a project of Councilman John M. Gullixson since he took office in 1990. Gullixson, who is active in a youth basketball league, has frequently complained about the lack of indoor facilities for basketball players.

He often refers to the disparity between the city’s 58,000 residents having one gym at Travis Ranch Activity Center, and Placentia’s 40,000 residents having five gyms.

“Travis Ranch is a tremendous facility, but it gets a lot of use,” Gullixson said.
