The Esperanza Aztlan, the student newspaper at Esperanza High School in Anaheim, interviewed recent transfer students about their assumptions and expectations about Californians.

Some revelations: “Kids out here are really into surf wear, and the high school is different because it has an outdoor campus,” said a transfer student from Wisconsin.

A transplant from North Carolina thought, based on media stereotypes, that there would be more convertibles full of teens and surfboards headed to the beach. What she found is that teens are basically the same. However, she says, teens here are more sensitive to what they say and have learned to avoid trouble as a result of the closer living quarters.
