COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Northridge Gains Split in Softball

After committing three errors and losing the opener, 2-1, Cal State Northridge responded with 13 hits in the second game to beat Utah, 7-0, and earn a split in a Western Athletic Conference softball doubleheader Friday in Salt Lake City.

The split leaves the teams deadlocked in second place at 11-3 in WAC play, two games behind Fresno State.

Northridge right-hander Amy Windmiller (18-2), who entered the game with the lowest earned-run average among NCAA Division I pitchers, allowed four hits in the opener. Utah scored two unearned runs in the second inning and the fourth-ranked Matadors could not recover. The defeat snapped a 14-game winning streak for Windmiller, whose ERA is 0.20.

Freshman Cyndee Bennett, a graduate of Glendale High, doubled to lead off the second and scored on an errant throw by Northridge third baseman Shannon Jones. Tricia Beer scored later on a passed ball to give 15th-ranked Utah (33-9) a 2-0 lead.

In the second game, Northridge (36-7) was paced by three-for-four performances by Beth Calcante and Jennifer Parker. Jones went two for two with two runs batted in on sacrifice flies.

Matador right-hander Kathy Blake (12-5) allowed seven hits and recorded her ninth shutout.

BASEBALL

Cal Lutheran 14, Occidental 0--Scott Sebbo and John Becker each drove in three runs the lead the Kingsmen (22-5-1, 15-1) in a Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game. Sebbo, Becker, Kirk Fellows and Joe Gordon homered for the Kingsmen.

Biola 4, The Master’s 0--For the second consecutive day, the Mustangs (11-28-2) fell victim to a shutout in an NAIA District 3 game at La Mirada.

Kenya Hunt had two of the Mustangs’ four hits against Mike Gerlitz (6-2), who struck out three and walked one.

Adam Davis (3-2) of Master’s allowed four earned runs on 11 hits and four walks in eight innings, striking out four.
