BOYLE HEIGHTS : City Grant Funds Center’s Repairs

Share

The Aliso-Pico Multipurpose Center is undergoing long-awaited repairs with a grant from the city approved last week.

The 14-year-old building at 1505 E. 1st St. will receive $40,000 from the city to replace plexiglass, carpeting and tile, and repair the roof, electrical system, air conditioning and parking lot.

“These repairs have been needed for about eight years and we’ve got a high volume of people coming through here,” said director Johnny Odom.

Already, city crews have replaced some doors in the building and lights in the parking lot, and have done some work on the roofing and air conditioning system, Odom said.

The City Council last year also approved spending $175,000 for repairs at the center.

Each day 200 to 300 people pass through the center’s doors to find housing, employment and food, and to attend tutoring and English as a Second Language classes. Summer programs include day trips to local attractions.

The building is also home to a youth advocacy program, recreational activities, a prenatal care program and medical clinic. And a senior nutrition program serves 50 lunches a day.
