Charlie Wegher, new football coach at Agoura High, definitely knows the lay of the land around these parts.

In fact, his first football practice was run on the Agoura field back in 1974, when he was a youngster playing Pop Warner ball. He lives in a condominium across the street from the school.

“I know my way around pretty well,” he said.

Wegher, an assistant coach at Agoura for the last three seasons, replaces Frank Greminger, who stepped down after 25 years. Greminger compiled a 154-99-3 record, leading the Chargers to five Frontier League championships and the Southern Section’s Desert-Mountain Conference title in 1984.

Wegher, 30, won’t need a road map to find the teams on the Chargers’ league schedule. Wegher played against Agoura as a quarterback at Marmonte League rival Westlake.

Wegher graduated from Westlake in 1982 and played at Cal State Northridge from 1982-84.

Despite his relative youth, Wegher has served as an assistant at either Westlake or Agoura since 1987. He was junior varsity head coach at Westlake in 1988.

The Agoura position is his first head coaching job at the varsity level.

“This job will probably put some wrinkles on me,” he cracked.

Agoura finished 4-6 last season and in a three-way tie for third in league play at 3-4.
