PREP ROUNDUP : Canyon Wins Match on Doubles Victory

The No. 2 doubles team of Warren Wang and Andy Choi won the decisive third set, 6-4, to give seventh-ranked Canyon a 10 2/3-10 1/3 victory over Villa Park in a Century League boys’ tennis match Wednesday.

Villa Park (6-4) won all nine sets in singles play, but Canyon (13-5, 6-4) fortified its doubles team by moving No. 1 singles player Paul Espinoza to No. 3 doubles, where the Comanches won eight of nine sets.

In the Empire League:

Esperanza 12 2/3, Cypress 8 1/3--Devin Lopez swept at No. 1 singles, 6-4, 6-1, 6-0, for third-place Esperanza (11-9, 7-3).

Foothill 19 2/3, El Modena 1 1/3--Dan Greenwood swept in singles, 6-1, 6-1, 6-0, for Foothill (19-1, 10-0).

Los Alamitos 21, Katella 0--Todd Kaplin swept at No. 1 singles, 6-4, 6-2, 6-4, for Empire League champion Los Alamitos (15-3, 9-1).

In the Orange League:

Brea-Olinda 14, Western 7--The No. 1 doubles team of Alex Tiquia and Tony Lin swept its match, 6-2, 6-2, 6-1, for Brea-Olinda (14-5, 7-2).

Magnolia 17 1/3, Savanna 2 2/3--Magnolia’s (9-8, 4-5) Farhan Karimi swept in singles, 6-4, 6-1, 6-1.

In the Pacific Coast League:

Trabuco Hills 13, Laguna Beach 8--Bryan O’Donnell swept in singles, 6-3, 6-2, 6-2, for the Mustangs (12-6, 6-2).

In the Empire League golf finals:

Esperanza sweeps top three places--Chris Berry won his third consecutive Empire League title by tying teammate Ryan Donovan, each shooting 79-74 for a two-round total of 153 at Western Hills and Yorba Linda Country Club. Both qualify for the Southern Section individual championships, May 23, along with third-place finisher Scott Lucidi (78-80-158), also of Esperanza, and Los Alamitos’ Bret Younker (75-84-159), who was fourth.

In Sea View League golf:

Corona del Mar 191, Irvine 236--Kevin Walden shot a one-under 34 at Newport Beach CC for the Sea Kings (16-2, 11-1) as they tied Santa Margarita for the league title.
