Mahony Presides Over Slain Priest’s Funeral
Hundreds of parishioners and dozens of fellow clergy bade farewell this week to a Roman Catholic priest who was slain last week while vacationing in San Diego.
Cardinal Roger Mahony presided over the funeral Mass on Monday for Louis A. Gutierrez at St. Paul’s Catholic Church on West Washington Boulevard, where Gutierrez had been pastor for nine years before his recent transfer to Holy Spirit parish. He was buried at Resurrection Cemetery in South San Gabriel.
Gutierrez, 61, was shot to death April 26 in a motel room. A fellow priest in an adjoining room told police he heard a crashing sound around 6:15 a.m. and a slamming door, but police have little else to go on. No arrests have been made.
