An Oxnard woman who was shot to death at her home on Mother’s Day was identified Monday as Victoria Ramey, 31, who neighbors said was an unemployed mother of a 5-year-old boy.

Ramey died about 9:30 p.m. in her home in the 800 block of La Canada Avenue in Oxnard. Police later arrested Gary Michael Rose, 25, who called police about the shooting and surrendered to them at the Ramey home.

Rose was being held at Ventura County Jail in lieu of $250,000 bail.

Although police listed Rose as an Oxnard resident, friends of the victim said Rose had recently moved from Indiana and had been staying with Ramey for the last two weeks while he looked for a job.

“She really liked to help people,” said James Darpino, 20, of Oxnard, a Ramey friend who once rented a room from her in the home. “He was staying with Vickie until he could get a job.”

Friends and neighbors said they would never suspect that Rose would hurt Ramey. Although neighbors said Ramey was engaged to be married to another man at the time of her death, they said she and Rose had been engaged a few years ago.

“He seemed to be a real calm and collected guy,” said Nadine Watson, 19, a friend and neighbor of Ramey. “He was the type of person who would walk away when he was steamed.”

Friends said Ramey has a 5-year-old boy who lives with her ex-husband.

In another Mother’s Day killing, Ventura police were searching Monday for Raul Cervantes Viveros, 46, who is suspected of shooting Juan M. Vargas in a dispute over loud music.

Vargas, a 31-year-old landscaper and father of three, was shot in the mobile home park where the family lived, as his wife watched.

Viveros left in his vehicle, which was located later Sunday in the Wagon Wheel area north of Oxnard, police said.

According to police, the shooting occurred after Viveros had asked Vargas to turn down music playing from his home. When Vargas refused, Viveros allegedly came back and shot him in front of the victim’s mobile home, just off Victoria Avenue, near the Ventura Freeway.
