Playing his first match on clay in nearly a year, top-seeded Pete Sampras extended his winning streak to 22 matches by defeating Aaron Krickstein in the Italian Open at Rome, 6-1, 7-6 (7-2).
Others advancing included Michael Stich, Jim Courier, Goran Ivanisevic, Andrei Medvedev, Thomas Muster, Boris Becker and Andre Agassi.
