BASEBALL DAILY REPORT : AROUND THE MAJORS : Browning Might Pitch Again in ’94

Tom Browning of the Cincinnati Reds was released from a San Diego hospital Tuesday, one day after suffering a broken left arm and collapsing during a game against the Padres Monday night.

The team’s trainer said that there is a chance the 34-year-old left-hander will pitch again this season. The severity of the break was such that the popping sound of Browning’s upper left arm could be heard in the press box.

The Reds placed Browning, whose last two seasons were ended prematurely by injuries, on the 15-day disabled list.

Florida Marlin right fielder Gary Sheffield will be sidelined for about three weeks after suffering a bruised left rotator cuff trying to make a diving catch Monday night.

“I know I was told not to dive after balls in spring training,” Sheffield said. “It’s instinct.”

The Marlins recalled outfielder Carl Everett from triple-A Edmonton to replace Sheffield.

Boston Red Sox shortstop John Valentin is expected to be sidelined at least four weeks after surgery to remove torn cartilage in his right knee. He is batting .282 with two homers in 23 games. . . . The Baltimore Orioles placed outfielder Jeffrey Hammonds on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to May 4 because of a strained right knee. . . . The Brewers placed third baseman Kevin Seitzer on the 15-day disabled list because of a torn left hamstring and placed pitcher Bill Wegman on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to May 4, because of a lower abdominal strain. Infielder Jeff Cirillo and outfielder Matt Mieske were recalled from triple-A New Orleans. . . . Steve Sax was put on the 15-day disabled list by the Oakland Athletics because of a sore left heel; infielder Fausto Cruz was recalled from triple-A Tacoma.. . . . Left-hander Chris Haney was optioned to Kansas City’s triple-A Omaha team after lasting only 3 1/3 innings Monday night. The Royals called up Jeff Granger, a first-round pick in the 1993 draft, from double-A Memphis. . . . The Pirates sent struggling outfielder Kevin Young to triple-A Buffalo and recalled outfielder Gary Varsho.

Michael Jordan went 1 for 4 with a walk, a strikeout and two putouts in the Birmingham Barons’ 5-4 victory over Orlando. Jordan is hitting .253 with 10 stolen bases.
