SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

An elderly Palmdale man was killed Sunday after he drove his car in front of a teen-age boy’s oncoming car at an intersection, according to Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies.

Gilbert Richman, 72, died at the scene of the 8:20 a.m. collision at the intersection of 40th Street East and Avenue S, said Lt. Daniel Castillo of the Antelope Valley Sheriff’s Station.

Castillo said Richman halted his 1973 Mercury at a stop sign on 40th Street East. But he then drove in front of an oncoming Ford Mustang driven by a 17-year-old boy on Avenue S, which did not have a stop sign.

“The Mustang struck the Mercury in the driver’s door, killing Mr. Richman instantly,” Castillo said.

He said the speed of the vehicles was unknown and the accident remains under investigation.

The youth was treated at Palmdale Hospital Medical Center for minor injuries and released, Castillo added. He was not cited because he had the right of way at the intersection.
