Sea Hero, last year’s Kentucky Derby and Travers winner, ended an eight-month layoff by winning the $40,000 allowance feature at Belmont Park on Tuesday.

Sea Hero, ridden by Jerry Bailey and assigned high weight of 119 pounds, showed no signs of rustiness. The 4-year-old son of Polish Navy raced within easy striking distance of leader Dominant Prospect until the field turned for home, then pulled away to beat Rocking Josh by 1 1/4 lengths in 1:22 3/5 for the seven furlongs.

The race, originally to be run on turf, was moved to the muddy main track. It was Sea Hero’s sixth victory in 17 career starts.

Sea Hero, the favorite, returned $5.40, $4.20 and $2.40. Rocking Josh paid $4.80 and $2.40 and Dominant Prospect returned $2.40.

“I’m glad it’s over,” trainer Mack Miller said of the layoff. “I liked (the victory) very much because he’s really not a sprinter, he’s a router.”
