Sam Arroyo, a senior pitcher from Buena High and Ventura College, will start for Cal Lutheran against UC San Diego in the first game of the NCAA Division III West Regional today at 3 p.m. in La Jolla.

Arroyo, a right-hander, has a record of 8-1 with one save and an earned-run average of 2.73.

“He’s the guy who’s pitched Friday games for us all year,” Kingsmen Coach Marty Slimak said. “He’s used to being in that spot.”

Slimak said that Arroyo’s arm recovers quickly, which might enable him to pitch again on Sunday if the best-of-five series goes a fourth and fifth game.

The winner of the series advances to the Division III College World Series next weekend in Battle Creek, Mich.

Marc Weiss and David Jaglowski, both right-handers, will start for Cal Lutheran (29-6-1) in Saturday’s doubleheader. Weiss, a junior from Los Angeles, has a record of 9-1 with a 3.01 ERA. Jaglowski, a sophomore from Apple Valley, is 5-1 with an ERA of 6.24.

UC San Diego (28-4) has not announced its starting rotation, but the Tritons probably will start Ryan Flanagan (8-2), a senior left-hander, against Arroyo.

The San Diego staff also includes left-hander Steve Height (5-0) and right-handers Mark Hartmann (6-1) and Marc Abrams (3-1).

The Tritons’ closer is Kurt Luhrsen, a hard-throwing right-hander who is 5-0 with six saves.

The teams last met in the 1992 West Regional and the Kingsmen won in four games.
