Parmenter, 13, Chosen for Festival Team

Jennifer Parmenter, a 13-year-old from Granada Hills, is the youngest among area athletes--and the youngest of the 99 swimmers--who have been selected to compete in the U.S. Olympic Festival, July 1-10 in St. Louis.

Parmenter, who attends L.A. Baptist High in North Hills, will be joined in the competition by John Jenkins of Crescenta Valley High, Erin Schatz of Agoura High and Rebecca Gilman, Mandy Walz and Nicole Beck, all from Buena High.

Jennifer Johnson, an outside hitter from Sherman Oaks and UCLA, will compete for the South squad in women’s volleyball. Marion Jones, a record-setting track star from Thousand Oaks, will play for the South squad in women’s basketball.

Baseball

Ribet Academy, coached by Doug MacKenzie, withdrew from the Southern Section playoffs and was replaced by First Lutheran because nearly half the team chose to take part in a senior cruise to Mexico this week. Ribet (10-7-1, 6-5-1 in league play) finished third in the Heritage League.

Moorpark College pitcher Jeff Naster, a 6-foot-2, 215-pound right-handed sophomore, has signed a letter of intent to play at Fresno State, spurning offers from Cal State Northridge, Wyoming and Cal State Sacramento.

Naster, 20, finished 7-4 with a 3.36 earned-run average.

Westlake’s Scott Morris has signed a letter of intent to play at Texas Tech, Warrior Coach Rich Herrera said. Morris began the season as a shortstop and then moved to the outfield. He also pitched.

Basketball

An all-star game between members of City Section and Southern Section schools will be played Sunday at San Fernando High at 4 p.m.

City players expected to participate include Damon Ollie and Fantasia Johnson of North Hollywood, Kenyatta Niles of Monroe and Lamar Thompson of Sylmar. Southern Section players include Charles Woodard of Canyon, Pharoah Davis of Highland and Al Lairson of Palmdale.

Tennis

Heather Klein, an All-Mission League tennis player for Chaminade High, has signed a letter of intent to attend San Jose State.

Cycling

Three area cyclists led their team to a national record while winning a National Cycling League event last weekend.

Thurlow Rogers of Van Nuys, Shawn Cronkhite of Chatsworth and John Wordin of West Hills, members of the Nutra-Fig Cycling Team, combined to run away with first place in the 30-lap race.

Softball

Kodee Murray has been named coach for the revived softball program at Valley College, Athletic Director Chuck Ferrero said.

The daughter of longtime Hart High baseball Coach Bud Murray, Kodee most recently coached at Mira Costa High. She won a Southern Section title at Irvine Woodbridge in 1988.

Miscellany

The annual California Strawberry Festival 10K run is scheduled for Sunday in Oxnard. The 10K run starts at 8 a.m. at Harbor Boulevard and Sunset Lane in the Channel Islands Harbor area. Also scheduled is a non-competitive two-mile family run. Entry fee is $20 for the 10K run, $16 for the family run.
