LA JOLLA — The Cal Lutheran baseball team lost to UC San Diego, 8-5, in the deciding game of the best-of-five NCAA Division III West Regional on Sunday at UC San Diego.
Cal Lutheran won the first two games of the series and entered Sunday’s games with a 2-1 lead. The Kingsmen lost the first game Sunday, 11-3, setting the stage for the championship.
Cal Lutheran scored three runs in the seventh inning of the final game to take a 5-2 lead.
But, in the bottom of the inning, shortstop Ed Castillo made a bad throw on what would have been a force play at second. The next batter hit a soft bouncer up the middle that glanced off pitcher Marc Weiss’ glove.
By the time the inning ended, fourth-ranked San Diego (31-6) had scored six unearned runs.
